Another fairly quiet day ahead, with highs in the lower 80s. Rain chances are fairly limited, but there is a better chance of showers south toward San Marcos, New Braunfels, and the Lockhart areas today. Wednesday looks a tad warmer with mid 80s and a small chance of a late afternoon shower, again most stay dry. Thursday evening into Friday remains our better rain window, but there has been a shift with the heavier amounts farther west. Pacific moisture is coming our way, but some drier air feeding in from the east could limit what reaches the ground. Halloween still looks fairly encouraging, although a few isolated showers remain possible, including during the afternoon. I’m not ready to promise a completely dry trick-or-treat window just yet, however most do stay dry, and rain chances are still quite low. Rainfall totals Right now, I’m leaning toward a few hundredths to around a quarter inch along the I-35 corridor, with some spots getting none. Amounts should increase farther west into the Hill Country. The better potential for 1–2 inches, looks well west toward the western Hill Country. Still some room for that rain axis to shift, so these amounts aren’t set in stone. And we may finally have a cold front worth talking about early next week, but as of right night it’s just a modest front as highs cooling back into the 70’s and lows in the 50’s. Mostly sunny skies today with highs generally in the mid to upper 80s, followed by another comfortable night in the mid to upper 50s. The usual cooler pockets will dip a little lower. So why the repeat button? We have a ridge of high pressure parked above Texas. Air underneath it sinks, making it harder for clouds to build into showers and storms. Clear skies and relatively dry air also let us cool off nicely at night before warming right back up each afternoon. That ridge is part of what we call an “omega block,” a big bend in the upper-level wind pattern. Basically, the atmosphere has gotten comfortable and isn’t in much of a hurry to move things along. Humidity gradually creeps back this weekend as the ridge slides east, allowing Gulf moisture and more overnight and morning clouds to return. Our next rain chance looks to arrive late Monday into Tuesday, but those chances are quite small. As for that possible front, the main storm system is trending farther north, leaving less push to bring the cooler air down here. The front may get hung up north of us, so I wouldn’t get too excited about another cooldown just yet. Confidence is high in the quiet weather through Sunday, but lower on next week’s rain and front. Honestly, it’s fairly calm overall, but there are a few things worth talking about. We’ve got a nor’easter sitting off the East Coast, keeping those northeast winds blowing from southern New Jersey down through coastal Virginia and the Outer Banks. The bigger concerns there are rough surf, coastal flooding and beach erosion. Basically, that wind keeps pushing ocean water toward shore. Out in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, a few storms could produce some hail and strong wind gusts this afternoon into early evening. Some localized flash flooding is possible as well, but we’re not looking at a big severe weather outbreak. As far as snow goes, nothing major showing up in today’s national outlook. Some snow is expected Wednesday in California’s southern Sierra Nevada, mainly above 9,000 feet. You’ll need a little elevation if you’re looking for winter! Otherwise, a few showers moving into northern California and some scattered showers and storms across Florida. Much of the country is getting a little break, and I don’t think anybody is complaining about that.
Friday October 16th The front is finally here, and so is the wind! Temps will continue falling this morning before leveling out late this morning. We may warm a few degrees by mid afternoon, but we’ve already hit our high for the day. Could see a few spotty showers through late morning, but these will be very few and far between. This afternoon, temps will range from the lower 60’s over the Hill Country to near 70° across our southeastern areas. Quite a change from that dog breath weather! Tonight gets chilly, especially with north winds continuing around 25–35 mph. Most areas will dip into the 40’s, with lower 40’s possible over the central Hill Country and near 50° southeast. Some spots could actually feel like the 30’s with the wind. Take a jacket if you’re heading out for Friday Night Lights or any other evening plans. Saturday stays plenty cool with highs in the 60’s. Winds finally ease some by the afternoon, dropping into the 10–15 mph range. Sunday morning will be our coldest morning. Clear skies and lighter winds should allow that daytime warmth to escape more easily overnight. Most areas will see mid to upper 40’s, but some of those colder, sheltered low spots could sneak into the upper 30’s, mainly over the Hill Country. Unfortunately, the cool weather doesn’t stick around. Southerly winds return next week, and we gradually warm back up, possibly reaching the mid to upper 80’s by late next week. Enjoy the jacket weather while we have it!
Okay, here we go! Just hours away from the cold front, and tomorrow is going to feel a whole lot different. Friday morning brings strong winds and some rain showers, so be ready for both heading out the door. Rain chances diminish by late morning, but clouds look to hang around most of the day, possibly clearing late in the evening. Temperatures will slowly fall into the mid 60’s by the afternoon. Those winds won’t be taking the afternoon or evening off, either. If you’re headed to Friday Night Lights or any other outdoor event, take a jacket. You’ve been asking for fall…just remember that when you’re sitting in those bleachers! Also, secure those Halloween decorations, patio furniture and trampolines tonight. No need to donate them to the next neighborhood. Saturday starts in the 40’s for much of the central and northern areas, with afternoon highs only reaching the mid 60’s. Still breezy, but winds should finally ease a bit by late afternoon. Sunday looks nice, starting in the mid to upper 40’s for most. A few colder spots could see lower 40’s, and perhaps an isolated upper 30’s reading if skies clear and winds go calm. Enjoy the jacket weather while it’s here. We gradually warm back up next week, with mid 80’s returning by midweek.
Okay, it’s not Christmas cold, but it’s our first really good cold front of the season! Look toward the northwest this evening and you may spot the towering clouds from the storms along the front. That’s the leading edge of our weather change headed this way. You can really see the difference on the temperature map, 60s around Abilene while we’re still sweating through the upper 80s and 90s. Somebody opened the right door for once! Thanks to Ray for sending these pictures from your plane! He had the best view of it, even from 150 miles away.

We’re seeing isolated to somewhat scattered showers this afternoon, mainly across our eastern and southeastern areas\. Bastrop, Wyldwood, Alum Creek, Smithville, Rosanky and Flatonia are among the spots that could catch some rain, with a few heavier pockets mixed in\. I’ll keep a chance for these showers around through the rest of the afternoon into early evening, but plenty of us will stay dry, especially farther west\. Skies are mostly cloudy across much of the area, with some partly cloudy breaks\. Temperatures are still running in the upper 80s to lower 90s, and it’s quite humid\. Still feeling a whole lot more like summer than October\!
